Think Big!...GMS as key to your business

Working in services, one interesting item that came up recently with some of our larger, enterprise customers is the concept of a more Service-Oriented Architecture—specifically when it comes to integration, and most especially for customers with the intention to integrate across multiple systems over time, rather than one or two specific primary content management systems.
As you may already know, today we provide a number of connectors for common CMS, and a portal for business users to submit translation requests, called ServiceDesk (soon to become the even more vastly improved and updated TransPort in WorldServer 9). However, if one intends to go beyond that in integrating with more proprietary or currently unsupported CMS, they may find themselves looking to customize WorldServer and build custom integration points through our WorldServer Software Development Kit (SDK) for each one. WorldServer SDK is extensive and provides quite a bit of flexibility to bend WorldServer to your business requirements; it is a powerful tool, making almost anything possible.
While our system is dynamic and has a changeable framework for meeting your needs, perhaps to a fault, an astute customer of ours noticed that with the number of CMS’s they were planning to integrate with (possibly dozens), it made sense to unify a common architecture with which all CMSs could interact, rather than tightly coupling with a specific CMS. This particular customer worked with us to create this integration with middleware and the use of WorldServer SDK, in a way that could be reusable in quickly adding in new content systems to WorldServer for translation. Notably, there is a fine balance that needs to be weighed for tight integration (which can make things virtually seamless, but builds dependency on the CMS), versus an integration that can more broadly be re-used. It all depends on your company and its requirements.
This makes for (hopefully) interesting debates. But the real bottom line is that the rules all change when viewing an enterprise-level GMS such as Idiom WorldServer as a core part of your business process. Thinking ahead of the game—is this the content’s native form? Am I thinking about globalization from start to finish? What level of integration meets my needs both now and in the future?—these are only some of the questions that have made all the difference for one customer in allowing quicker deployment and providing higher-quality, faster translations to the right people. This is what it’s all about.
Have you considered the long-term needs of not just your division, but your entire company? ‘Think big!‘ as the saying goes!
By the way, we’re continuing to think about this internally as well. We’ll probably have more to offer on this subject soon. Stay tuned… and thank you again, our customers, for your continued collaboration and partnership.
