Phil Ritchie from VistaTec gave a pretty cool presentation about their successes developing custom components using the SDK. I had traded a couple emails with Phil a few months ago when he was getting started writing custom filters, but I didn't know much about the results. It turns out they have written and tested multiple custom filters -- including a debug library to assist in further development -- and have some of their filters installed on systems owned by VistaTec's customers. The idea of components developed independently by one company being used by another is a fairly new phenomenon for us, and I find it really exciting.
One thing I've been hearing a lot about at WorldSummit this year is the sense that we need some way to facilitate the exchange of information and even tools between customers. The FireFox Add-on Community came up more than once as an example. This is definitely a great idea. There's a lot of independent development happening on top of the SDK, but there's no mechanism in place to show off that work to other people -- except for venues like WorldSummit. The Resource Center, or something similar, ought to be expanded to host this stuff, and to track enough metadata to help people find what they're looking for. Once that data is centralized, we could start to do interesting things, like generating notifications when components are upgraded, etc.
